Psychiatrist
Connor Belson, MD is an adult psychiatrist at Advaita Integrated Medicine in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. Belson completed his undergraduate degree, medical education, and psychiatric residency training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is excited to join the Advaita Health team at their Raleigh location, where he plans to provide holistic, patient-centered mental healthcare, and he is excited to serve the Raleigh community through his work with the organization. His medical training at the University of North Carolina instilled in him a strong passion for serving his community and caring for people from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and mental health concerns.
While in medical school, Dr. Belson received a department research award for his work related to the integration of primary care and mental healthcare into a single location for patients at UNC. As a psychiatry resident physician, he worked on a similar research project that compared physical health outcomes, including changes in rates of diabetes and hypertension, for individuals who received integrated primary care and mental healthcare at UNC. He also conducted research mapping disparities in clozapine use for individuals with schizophrenia across the state of North Carolina. He received a resident award for his research presentation at a statewide medical conference and received several medical student teaching awards throughout his residency training. Prior to medical school, he spent several summers working and conducting clinical research in Nicaragua and Malawi.
Dr. Belson enjoys providing psychiatric care to individuals with a wide range of mental health diagnoses and has extensive experience from his residency training working with individuals with depressive and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, psychotic disorders, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, and substance use disorders. He received specialized clinical training in residency working with individuals experiencing their first episodes of psychosis, individuals who were incarcerated, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He also enjoys working with university-aged and young adult populations, as well as athletes who are experiencing mental health concerns. He hopes to use his knowledge from prior research experiences to help educate his patients on the relationship between their physical and mental health and support them in making lifestyle changes that can positively impact both their physical and mental health. He hopes to provide individualized, holistic care to his patients by helping them first identify their treatment goals and then incorporate the interventions that best align with those goals, which might include a combination of psychotherapy, lifestyle interventions, medication management, and other treatment modalities as needed. He also incorporates education into his patient care and finds it to be a significant tool to help empower his patients in their medical care and treatment planning. He has a passion for healthcare policy and hopes to continue working to find innovative changes that can be made to improve the mental healthcare system for its patients.
Dr. Belson believes that mental healthcare is at its best when it is focused on deepening the relationships between the patient and their providers, when it allows the members of a patient’s care team to be integrated and collaborative, and when it emphasizes the patient’s treatment goals and overall experience. He hopes that his work at Advaita Health will help to strengthen this model and enact greater change towards these ideals across the greater mental healthcare landscape.
