Maggie Dwyer, BA

Clinical Intern

Maggie is an MSW Intern from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Maggie plans to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist after finishing her Master’s program. Previously, Maggie received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. Maggie has worked as a residential Program Support Tech at a substance abuse treatment center in Chapel Hill called Horizons. Maggie’s first year internship through the School of Social Work was at Benevolence Farm, working with formerly incarcerated women.

Maggie has a professional passion for peer support group work and the unique environment it creates for people with addictions to see their common humanity and feel less isolated. Maggie plans to make and impact at Green Hill Recovery and Advaita Integrated Medicine by encouraging cross talk and openness in the group setting. Maggie also hopes to broaden the scope of external resources for clients to include alternatives to traditional 12 Step groups.

Maggie hopes to see a shift in the way addiction and substance use are addressed in the United States. Historically and currently, people with substance use problems are criminalized, institutionalized, and shrouded in shame and stigma. Maggie would like to change the way we think of people who abuse substances and implement more preventative and holistic care. Maggie has a research interest in Medications for Addiction Treatment and how the field of addiction medicine can save lives.
