Clinical Therapist

Alexander Chao, LCSWA, is an Outpatient Therapist at Advaita Integrated Medicine. He earned his Master of Social Work from the University of Kentucky, where he focused on trauma-responsive practice, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management from Utah Valley University. Alexander works with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship concerns, and major life transitions. He approaches therapy with curiosity, flexibility, and an understanding that each client’s experiences are shaped by their relationships, identities, culture, and environment.

Alexander began his social work career providing intensive case management for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness. He later provided brief counseling and suicide risk assessments for young people in juvenile detention centers. Before entering behavioral health, Alexander spent seven years working in marketing, with experience in writing, photography, public relations, and paid advertising. He also served as president of a workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion committee, where he advocated for employees and helped create opportunities for people to share their experiences.

Alexander believes strong therapy begins with trust, open communication, and a willingness to adapt. He encourages clients to provide feedback about what is and is not working so that sessions remain useful and relevant to their goals. His approach draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy.

He helps clients better understand their emotions and behavioral patterns, build coping skills, strengthen self-esteem, and make choices that align with their values.

As a second-generation, queer Asian American, Alexander understands the importance of finding a therapist who recognizes how identity, culture, discrimination, and social systems can affect mental health. He is especially passionate about supporting clients from LGBTQIA+ communities, people of color, and individuals who have experienced homelessness or incarceration.

Alexander strives to create a thoughtful and affirming space where clients feel safe discussing the full complexity of their lives.
