Finding the right mental health provider isn’t just about finding someone who takes your insurance — it’s about finding the right fit for what you’re going through. Here’s who we have on our team:

Psychiatrists Psychiatrists are medical doctors who completed medical school and then went on to do additional specialized training in mental health. They diagnose mental health conditions, put together treatment plans, and prescribe and manage psychiatric medications.

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) PMHNPs can do everything you’d expect from a psychiatrist — evaluate your symptoms, reach a diagnosis, and manage your medications. They just got there through a nursing background instead of medical school. The level of care you receive is exactly the same.

Psychiatric Physician Assistants (Psychiatric PAs) Psychiatric PAs are clinicians who have chosen to focus their careers entirely on mental health. They can assess, diagnose, and prescribe — and like everyone else on our team, they bring the same commitment to personalized, unhurried care.

Therapists / Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) Our therapists work with you through evidence-based talk therapy and counseling. They’re trained to help people navigate a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges, and each one brings their own areas of specialty to the table.

We didn’t build our team by accident. We sought out providers across different backgrounds, credentials, and specialties so that we could match each patient with the right person for their unique situation — not just whoever had an opening. That’s what genuinely integrated care looks like.

Does United Healthcare Cover Mental Health Services?

Does United Healthcare Cover Mental Health Services?

Yes. United Healthcare / Optum is required by federal law to cover mental health and substance use care on equal footing with physical health care. What you actually pay out of pocket will depend on your specific plan — here’s what’s typically covered:

Psychiatry & Medication Management United Healthcare covers psychiatric evaluations, medication management visits, and follow-up appointments on most plans. Your cost will depend on whether you’ve met your deductible and what your copay or coinsurance rate is. Choosing an in-network provider like our team is the most straightforward way to keep those costs predictable.

Therapy & Counseling Individual therapy, couples counseling, group therapy, and family therapy are all covered under most United Healthcare plans. Coverage for ongoing sessions is typically available for as long as your provider determines treatment is clinically necessary.

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) TMS is a non-medication, FDA-cleared treatment for depression. It works by delivering gentle magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain that regulate mood. United Healthcare covers TMS for patients who qualify — usually those who haven’t gotten adequate relief from antidepressant medications. We handle the prior authorization process and verify your coverage before treatment starts.

Telehealth / Virtual Psychiatry United Healthcare covers telehealth mental health services on most plans. That means wherever you are in North Carolina, you can connect with one of our providers by video — same quality of care, no drive required.

Outpatient Programs When you need more than a weekly appointment but don’t need round-the-clock care, United Healthcare covers structured outpatient programs when your provider recommends them:

  • Substance Use PHP (Partial Hospitalization) — Full-day, structured programming for substance use and mental health treatment. You get intensive support during the day and are home in the evening, so you can keep up with your daily responsibilities without putting your care on hold.
  • Substance Use IOP — More flexible than PHP but still highly structured, this program supports addiction and mental health recovery while letting you keep up with your daily
  • Mental Health IOP — A structured group treatment program for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and trauma — for people who need more consistent support than weekly therapy alone provides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Advaita Integrated Medicine in-network with United Healthcare?

Yes. Advaita Integrated Medicine is in-network with United Healthcare / Optum. We accept most United Healthcare commercial plans. Plan structures and covered services can vary, so we always recommend letting us verify your specific benefits before your first appointment — it only takes a few minutes and saves a lot of guesswork.

What is the difference between in-network and out-of-network coverage?

Think of it this way: when you see an in-network provider, your insurance company has already agreed on what services cost and what your share will be. That agreement is what keeps your copays and coinsurance rates low. When you go out-of-network, that agreement doesn’t exist. United Healthcare may cover a reduced portion of the bill — or nothing at all, depending on your plan. For mental health care, this distinction carries extra weight. Therapy and psychiatry are typically ongoing — weekly or monthly visits over months or even years. A gap of $40 or $50 per visit between in-network and out-of-network costs can translate to thousands of dollars over the course of treatment. Choosing an in-network provider from the start is one of the most important financial decisions you can make when beginning mental health care.

What is the cost of therapy in North Carolina with United Healthcare?

In-network therapy costs with United Healthcare typically fall in these ranges: Individual therapy: $0–$60+ per session Group therapy: $0–$40+ per session Your actual cost depends on your plan’s deductible, copay, and coinsurance structure. Early in the year before your deductible is met, you may pay closer to the full contracted rate. Once it’s met, your regular cost-sharing kicks in and costs drop considerably. We’ll give you a clear benefits estimate before your first session so you know exactly what to expect.

What is the cost of psychiatry in North Carolina with United Healthcare?

Psychiatric visit costs with United Healthcare vary by plan and appointment type. General in-network ranges look like this: Initial psychiatric evaluation: $0–$150+ (after deductible/copay) Medication management follow-up: $0–$75+ per visit These are estimates — your real numbers depend on your specific plan and where you are in your deductible for the year. At Advaita Integrated Medicine, we verify your United Healthcare benefits before your first appointment so you always have a clear picture of your costs before you come in.
